Bur Cucumber

There are almost no flowers left on the bur cucumber plants.

The fruits are ripening. They are not edible.

But some of the pods have ripened and dropped their seeds already.

Here you can see the lacy texture of the support structure of the pod.

Neat. If they burst open like that when they ripen though, how come the dried ones never have the bottoms open? Maybe they have to be picked before they are fully ripe.
I like the light in the last shot, the way it shines through the open parts

Wow, I remember those from the Alleghenies. Never knew what they were called, and always wondered if anything ate them.
